Excerpts from Chapter 4: The Ancestors
"The same level of respect and veneration is found in the Diaspora as well. In places such as the Caribbean and Americas, the Ancestors of the enslaved who had passed on were added to the pantheon of Divinities. Not only just the Kmtyw but the indigenous Indian communities that lived in those lands before the arrival of eureurasiaans as well from other groups such as the East Indian and Chinese.
So for example in Brasil, the Kmtyw ancestors are known as Pretos Velhos whereas their Indian counterparts are referred to as Caboclos. We see similar in the Winti pantheon of Suriname and Guyanese Komfa as well.

The Ancestors also respond to the living by sending messages in dreams, through other individuals and even signs and symbols in Nature such as plants, animals, stones and the like. Staying aware and being open to them is the only way to discern and decipher these messages.
They continually send the messages in using various forms until such time when the individual finally realises it.
"In Vodun philosophy, communication with the Ancestors comes first of all by the will of the Ancestor. On our side, we have to make a lot of effort to develop our ability and observe so when they do something to attract our attention we can notice it."7 (Bello, 2013)

Lest we forget, the Ancestors are an internal part of us from birth; their genes exist within our DNA as we are the product of their unions over time. Ancestral communication thus reflects the attempt to activate their essence within us to draw and learn from the experience and wisdom garnered over their lifetimes, by tapping into the 'chromosome memory' inherent (Beauvoir, 2013).

Advances in Modern Science now confirm that various genetic markers in our chromosomes transmit traits, phobias and behavioural patterns between family members over generations, confirmation of this principle that Kmtyws have been aware of for millennia without the use of high-tech laboratory equipment in use today.
