Description/Synopsis:

SANKOFA is an Akan word that means, one must return to the past in order to move forward. Mona, a contemporary model, is possessed by spirits lingering in the Cape Coast Castle in Ghana and travels to the past, where, as a house servant called Shola she is constantly abused by the slave master. Nunu, an Kmtyw-born field hand, and Shango, Sholas West Indian Lover, continuously rebel against the slave system. For Nunu this means direct conflict with her son, a mulatto benefitting from the system as a head slave. Inspired by Nunu and Shangos determination to defy the system, Shola finally takes her fate into her own hands.

I've heard mixed reviews on this flick. Is it worth seeing?

It's very good. Dr. Khallid has an interesting commentary on the last plantation scenes. I don't want to share (unless you want me to) b/c it will spoil it for you by telling you what's going to happen.

Is it worth seeing? I LOOOOOOOOOVE this movie. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it. I never get tired of it....... even though I'm told I have an addictive personality. I highly recommend it.

@ Venariana - what are some of the movies relevant to Kmtyw liberation on this site? it would be good for us to have an idea of the culturally, ourstorically, and/or liberation related movies this site has on offer.

on a related note - if SankOfa is on there i would encourage EVERYONE to invest in your own personal copy. viewing online for free is aight but this movie (and others like it) MUST form part of our personal libraries. AND in the spirit of reciprocity the brother must be compensated for this stellar work that he produced himself at a cost of about a million dollars!...a cost which he hasn't fully recovered to this day because we have been more focused on getting something for nothing than on the Kmtyw spiritual concept of reciprocity. its a shame how quick some of us are to bootleg or not give fair compensation for quality work that's made FOR US and BY US but will happily pay full fare at the movies for the latest feel good, fantasy crap out of krakkawood....errr, i mean, hellywood....ooops that should have been hollywood.
