Mack was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1890. In 1895, he secured an appointment as a professor of law at Northwestern University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwestern_University). He transferred to the University of Chicago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Chicago) in 1902 and there remained until his retirement in 1940.
Mack was very active in civil service in Chicago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago). He served as civil service commissioner in 1903; circuit court judge for Cook County (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cook_County%2C_Illinois), 1903-11. He founded Chicago's first juvenile court in 1904, which was located across the street from Jane Addams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Addams)'s Hull House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull_House), and was the judge for the court until 1907. Mack served as a judge of the Cook County (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cook_County)Circuit Court (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circuit_Court) from 1904 to 1905 and the First Illinois District Appeals Court (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Illinois_District_Appeals_Court&action=edit&redlink=1) from 1905 to 1911.
In 1910, Mack was named by President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President)William Howard Taft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Howard_Taft) as a Judge of the short-lived US Commerce Court (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Commerce_Court), on which he served from 1911 to 1913. After the Commerce Court was abolished, Mack sat as a judge on several federal courts, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Court_of_Appeals_for_the_Second_Circuit), retiring in 1941.
During World War I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I), he served on the Commission of Labor of the Council of National Defense, the National War Labor Board (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_War_Labor_Board), and the War Department's Board of Inquiry on Conscientious Objectors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscientious_objector). He also organized Jewish war relief.
His Jewish charitable work included serving as president of the Palestine Endowment Funds, honorary president of the World Jewish Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Jewish_Congress), president of the American Jewish Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Jewish_Congress), Zionist Organization of America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zionist_Organization_of_America), and various other organizations.
